How do I match men's clothing?

There are so many rules when it comes to matching men’s clothing, but what’s most important is that you feel good. And when you look good, you feel good!

When it comes to matching your clothes, we have several pieces of advice from our team of style experts here at Ash & Erie.

First, start with a neutral base and then add pops of color and patterns. That might be keeping your pants a neutral color like blue, navy, grey, or charcoal, and then adding a shirt with more color and patterns. If you need some inspiration, here are some of our favorite combinations with a neutral pant and a color or patterned shirt:

When choosing your outfit, don’t feel the need to stick to just one color. For example, if you’re wearing a purple shirt, don’t feel the need to make all of your accessories (socks, Apple Watch band, etc.) also purple. That’s overkill. Rather, choose complementary colors.

In terms of your feet, we recommend going for socks and shoes that are similar to your pants. This will have an elongating effect on your legs. If your socks and shoes are drastically different from your pant color, your legs might feel cut off and shorter.

In terms of accessories, we recommend matching your leathers. It doesn’t have to be exact, but if you’re wearing a brown leather belt, we recommend going for a brown shoe and a brown watch. There are exceptions to this rule, but we recommend being mindful of your accessories and make sure they are complementary to one another.

These are some of the fashion rules we abide by when it comes to styling shorter men 5’8” and below. But like all rules, some are meant to be broken, right? Want to wear a patterned top with bright color pants? Do it! Wear what makes you feel most confident. When you feel good, you look good!
