How do you fit men for dress shirts?

Our Everyday Shirts are sized based on chest, from XS / Slim to XXL / Standard. Our Dress Shirts are sized based on neck, from 14 / Slim to 17.5 / Standard. If you’re interested in how to measure yourself for our Everyday or Dress Shirts, see this article.

We at Ash & Erie have done thousands of fittings with men our size to perfect our shirt fit for men 5’8” and under. We’ve learned that there are some important considerations when choosing a shirt.

First, you want to make sure that there is room to breathe in the neck. That means you should be able to put a finger or two between your shirt and your neck when the shirt is fully buttoned up.

Similarly, you’ll want to ensure that you have room to breathe in your chest. When you breathe, the buttons should not pull or feel extra tight.

In the body and waist, you’ll need to choose between a Slim or Standard fit. Our Slim fit has more taper throughout the midsection, while our Standard fit offers more room in the belly while maintaining a modern fit.

In terms of sleeves, the sleeves should fall at the end of your wrist and base of your thumb. In terms of body length, you’ll want a shirt that falls near the middle of your zipper and is not too long. However, plenty of men 5’8” and below are wearing shirts that are far too long for them! That’s why we perfected the shirt fit for men our size.
